On the eve of the match towards New Zealand, assistant trainer Sanjay Bangar said that Dhawan is so "precious" that skipper Virat Kohli and head trainer Ravi Shastri are keen to attend although the opener is fit for the ultimate league sport towards Sri Lanka on July 6.

The 3 selectors - chairman MSK Prasad, Devang Gandhi and Sarandeep Singh -- are these days in England and "wanted to announce a replacement straightaway".

"... But the team management seemed against the idea as a replacement would have meant that Dhawan would practically have no chance of making it if India goes into the semi-finals. Look at his hand. It's plastered and things are not great," a BCCI source, aware about the advance, said on conditions of anonymity.

Former off-spinner Sarandeep appears to be a longer part of the workforce as he is always present in its attire and pretty lively throughout training periods.

Regarding Pant, a last decision was arrived at when the workforce control was convinced that it could desire a back-up if the situation turns worse.

"He (Pant) bats in the middle-order, and obviously being a left-hander (also) helps. He was picked as a stand-by as well. So the team management has gone and picked him," Bangar said.

The delay in formally saying Pant as duvet even after the workforce control and selectors had agreed was because of the vital clearances that the BCCI needed to procure from the administrators and office-bearers.

The BCCI logistics workforce begins functioning as soon as the entire approvals are in position. Pant would be taking a flight from Delhi to Manchester on Thursday.
